Under the Microscope Guest Krist V. Gernaey Receives DKK 60 Million NNF Grant

We’re excited to announce a major achievement by one of our podcast guests, Prof. Krist V. Gernaey, Head of the Process and Systems Engineering Center at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Krist and his team have secured 60 million DKK in funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF) to lead the MORE GAS project.

The project – MOdular REactor platform for microbial GAS fermentation – tackles a key challenge: how to scale sustainable, gas-based biomanufacturing using microorganisms. This cutting-edge research combines microbial fermentation, bioreactor engineering, and artificial intelligence to develop scalable, low-carbon production pathways.

The funding comes through the Foundation’s 2025 Challenge Programme, which supports bold, interdisciplinary research in biomanufacturing, cardiometabolic disease, and AI-driven innovation.

Krist appeared on Episode 232 – Industrial Fermentation: Biofuels, Bioreactors, Microorganisms, where he explained how digital twins, process modelling, and advanced microbial systems are changing the future of industrial biotechnology.

His insights on sustainable bio-based production are now being implemented on a much larger scale through the MORE GAS project — a direct bridge between scientific vision and innovation funding.

📣 Congratulations, Prof. Krist V. Gernaey

From bioreactors and fermentation to AI-driven production systems, Prof. Gernaey’s work continues to shape the next generation of biotechnology. We’re honoured to share this exciting update and to have featured his perspective on Under the Microscope.

We’ll be following the progress of the MORE GAS project closely — and we’re proud to see Krist’s vision funded and activated at scale.
